Pipe Just Burst? Here's Exactly What to Do in the First 24 Hours

Colorado Springs winters are hard on plumbing. A warm afternoon can turn into a hard freeze overnight, and pipes running through crawlspaces, garages, and exterior walls take the hit. When one finally gives, water spreads through drywall, subfloor, and insulation faster than most people expect. What you do in the first 24 hours matters almost as much as the repair itself. Here's the order of operations.

1. Shut off the water at the main.

Every home has a main shutoff valve, usually near the water meter, in a basement, crawlspace, or utility closet. Turning it off stops the flooding at the source. If you can't find it or can't reach it safely, shutting off the valve at the fixture closest to the break is the next best option.

2. Cut the power to the affected area if water is anywhere near outlets, switches, or your panel.

If there's any doubt, don't wade through the water. Shut off the breaker for that area from a dry location, or call an electrician before you go back in.

3. Stop what you can, safely.

Towels, buckets, and a wet/dry shop vac can slow the spread while you wait for help. Move furniture, rugs, and boxes off wet flooring if it's safe to do so. The longer fabric and wood sit in standing water, the less likely they're salvageable.

4. Document before you clean up.

Insurance claims live and die on documentation. Take photos and video of the water source, the affected rooms, and any damaged belongings before you start moving things or drying up. Note the time you discovered the leak. Most policies ask for it.

5. Start pulling standing water if you're able.

A shop vac or even towels and mops make a real difference in the first hour. You don't need to fully dry the space yourself; that's what the extraction equipment is for. Just cut down how long materials sit saturated before help arrives.

6. Call a restoration company before the 24–48 hour mark.

This is about when mold spores start taking hold in wet material.
